You truly can’t have a “Jazz Series” without
Something inspired by the “Chairman of the Board”! Though many may quibble as to exactly what defined the “Sinatra Style” most would say that his style was simply that he was in a class by himself. Sinatra’s amazingly long and sometimes tumultuous career spanned literally every manner in the music lexicon. Best of all… he was a survivor.
And what is our Jazz Series without one of his famous hats? Baron is proud to have played a small part in his style. And, like everything Sinatra did in his life, his hats were chosen with exacting detail and perfection. Among his two most famous “looks” were the “fabric” fedora, and the “straw” fedora.
In the past, Baron has made several of these hats personally “Chairman” himself. The “fabric” fedora was a Sinatra original. Many times, when he would have a line of custom suits made, he would make sure to have his tailor save a bolt of the fabric of each suit, which in turn was brought to one of his hat makers, including Baron’s. The hat was then cover with the material, therefore giving Sinatra a matching hat for every suit!
The other style was a modified Trilby, made in straw, with a special four-pleated fabric extra-wide hatband. Sinatra was known to wear these hats during what many believe to be the peak of his craft _ during the 1950s and 1960s, when he recorded his ballads and “swing” songs for Capitol Records. The brilliance of these recordings come not only from the fact that he was at the top of his form, but that he was coming back as one major magazine described it: “from the dead”. Sinatra is such a legend now that most people forget that after his initial skyrocketing fame, he went through a little “tumble”, and these Capitol recordings helped to bring him back to the top. It wasn’t easy and the deal that Capitol gave him was that they would only record him if he was willing to forfeit his advance and pay all of his own studio costs. As many historians have written, it was a humiliating offer, but Sinatra took it like the courageous confident fighter he was, and, in the process, turned his life around!
The famous picture, seen on his albums of those years, shows a mature, soulful, strong-willed Sinatra, wearing one of his famous straws, his head tilted up to the sky, as if to say to the world, or perhaps to God himself: “I’m back, I’m doing it my way don’t mess with me again, because, no matter what you throw at me, I will always rise to the top!”
In honor of his resilience, talent and grandeur, Baron Hats has created, as part of its “Jazz Series” of hats, “The Capitol”, a custom dyed straw fedora “in the style of Sinatra”, inspired by his infamous straw hat of the time. It’s made of the very special “Parasisol” hand-woven straw, with the compact telescope crown and short brim and is dyed in our very own “eagle-eye blue-gray” color. The hat is completed with a special four pleated silk-satin hatband and our exclusive “touch_ de satin” fabric sweatband. As with all our custom hats it also comes with our special Lifetime Guarantee, and a signed and numbered personalized Certificate of Authenticity.
“The Capitol” is made in our own studios in Burbank, California, under the strict supervision of Master Hat Maker and Owner, Mark Mejia. It’s been specially priced so that everyone can wear this amazing symbol of resilience. Put this baby on, tilt your head to the sky, and you’ll suddenly feel the strength of the gods, or at least the strength of one most magnificent musical blue-eyed god… to do it “your way”!
