“THE SUNNYBROOK”
The Perfect Gift For the Perfect
Girl!
Inspired by Shirley Temple’s hats in the classic “Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm”
In Latin folklore, especially in the rural areas of Mexico and South America, mother’s, grandmother’s, godmothers, and beloved extended family would
purchase a “Sonrisa De Niña”
hat for that very special girl
in their life. The “Child’s Smile” was blessed and promised not only to protect the child, but to give the lucky girl who wore
it a “halo of joy”.
When Baron Hats owner and Master Hatmaker, Mark Mejia was watching Shirley Temple in “Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm” with his children, he was reminded of such a hat and wanted to offer it.
But the true magic of this hat comes from the authentic materials and the love that true
Master Weavers bring to it. Mark found such craftsmen when he was asked to create the special sailor hats for
Russell Crowe’s star vehicle, “Master and Commander”
in the remote town of Tlepehuala in Guerrerro, South America
where there lives the "special ones" considered the "elder masters", who still make
a special weave from hand-woven and hand-stitched and braided
fine local straw. Mark had
these artisans make the hats for the movie, but also convinced them to create the “Sonrisa De Niña” hats in the traditional style exclusively for Baron Hats. Thus the “Sunnybrook” was born!
The
hats are waterproof, and incredibly resilient and are made with the ancient “Japanning” process. Each hat is made of naturally harvested hand-woven local Paja de Tigo straw, in
the distinctive “trenzado” nine-fold weave. There are
special stave diamond pattered “halo rings” at the brim entr’acte, and again at the brim-edge. The open crown is enhanced with a hand-tied pink satin ribbon finished with a handmade matching silk-satin rose!
