"The Sharpshooter"
Inspired
by the hat worn by Tom Selleck in “Quigley Down Under”*
Now
this is one hell of a hat! A hat that makes a statement.
You can’t ignore anyone wearing this wonderful creation!
You can see this hat comin’ atcha from miles away…
just like a bullet from the famous Sharp’s rifle that
Matthew Quigley (aka Roy Cobb), used in this most
beloved of westerns! This was one of those rare movies
in which everything shined. Script, cast (many believe
this was Tom Selleck’s best work), music, and all
those great “extra’s”, that have now become part of
the western lexicon, from his amazing rifle, to his
knife (see below to learn how to get the original
knife as well!), to that unmistakable hat. We’ve had
so many custom requests for this beauty, that we’re
now offering it as one of our classic reproductions.
We call it the “Sharpshooter”,
both in honor of Quigley’s occupation, and for that
famous rifle. (The infamous gun was actually a replica
model 1874 Sharps
Buffalo Rifle fitted to fire .45-110 paper patch black
powder cartridges, and had a barrel length of 34 inches,
and yes, it really could do everything you saw in
the movie, including travel so fast and so far that
you’d feel the bullet before you heard the shot!).
The hat itself is a modified “Tom Mix” style with
an extra high crown and wide brim, with that unmistakable
over-extended “gallop fold” to create its popular
personality! We dye it in the original silver-belly,
and it comes with the original extra wide hand-tooled
leather hatband. You can get it with the unique leather
hand-woven stampede strings with a double-loop brim
wrap as Tom wore it, or without. This is not a hat
for everybody, but for those who seem to handle “larger
than life” with the same ease that Quigley shoulders
his thunder gun!
Please note: The original crown was higher than the
one we offer. We have found that most customers do
not want the oversized crown height, since, unless
you tower over the world like Mr. Selleck, it looks
a bit "odd". However, if you want your "Sharpshooter"
to be the same height of the original, simply let
us know in the "Special Instructions" box
in our shopping cart, and we will make it such, at
no extra charge! Also, the color of your "Sharpshooter"
will be that of the original hat. However, because
of the many variances in computer monitors, the color
you see on your screen may be slightly different that
the actual custom made hat. Rest assured, you are
getting the original hat in the original color!
